Abstract
This report examines the Roman pottery from two sites within the colonia of York. The General Accident and Rougier Street sites yielded 9,500 sherds from a succession of building and dump levels dating from the mid 2nd through to the 4th century. A dating framework is based mainly upon the samian and mortaria. The deposits of mid to late 2nd century date are of particular value as they chart the decline of local Eboracum wares in relation to black-burnished and other associated wares. A wide range of 3rd and 4th century sherds were recovered, although the mixed nature of the later deposits limited their value for coarseware studies. The text includes discussion of detailed statistical analyses of the wares by fabric and period. Full data are presented within the text and on microfiche. A catalogue of 705 vessels is included which contributes significantly to the pottery type series for the Roman colonia in York.
The amphorae from the two sites are covered in a separate report which provides a general summary of amphorae from York sites excavated by the Trust in the colonia, the fortress and the extra-mural area. Discussion of the individual types identified is followed by a catalogue of selected sherds, including 174 individual entries and all the bodysherds examined. Full quantitative data for each site are provided in the catalogue. Analysis of the quantities of material found shows the wide range of amphorae-carried goods received in York from several different regions of the Roman Empire, while emphasising, in particular, the important position held by Spanish olive-oil and French wine in the economy of the British province.
